Whoa!! From My Window

View Though Patio Door

When I showed the first From My Window, you could see this is just a neighborhood with a small retention pond behind our home. Well, the latest photo, taken by Dan, came as a surprise.

While I was finishing up my breakfast, I noticed, what I thought was a crumpled up paper on the other side of the bank. I kept watching as it “floated” toward our side of the pond. As it got closer, I mentioned to Dan that it looked like two eyes. I stopped eating and walked to the door so I could watch closer.

WHOA!!

Finally, my suspicions were verified. A back popped up behind those eyes. AN ALLIGATOR!!!

Dan’s camera was handy, but he didn’t have his zoom lens on. So this is the best we could do. Here is the photo after I cropped it.

It was not a very large one, maybe four or five feet long. Just a guess. I have been watching for it since Thursday, but so far haven’t seen it again.

We have noticed all the ducks that were around the pond have disappeared. They must have flown off to one of the other ponds in the neighborhood. Playing it safe. I doubt that the gator could have eaten all of them in one day. We saw the ducks on Wednesday.

I did watch an Anhinga swimming with just his head up today. Typical for the Anhingas, but he came out after a while without getting eaten. Plus, a Great Blue Heron safely fished along the bank today. So, maybe Mr. Beedie Eyes [as I have named him] has left.

Stay Tuned!!

  1. Alligators are my daughter and my favorites! (I hate to say it here, but I loved alligators and snakes long before I developed my birding passion!) She is kind of strange like her father. Our last trip to the Okefenokee she spent the entire time trying to paddle as close to the gators as possible to get footage of them splashing into the water! She really impressed her friends with some good alligator footage on her YouTube channel! So if one comes too close for comfort at your house, we might just have to make a trip and rescue you! lol

  2. Dear Mr Lee, I’ve never been to Florida but for sure I’d be in trouble. I left my back door open for my dogs to go in and out a couple of weeks ago and a snake crawled in and got away. The next night, I saw it in the kitchen, capped it with a skillet lid and killed it with a knife. I have eat alligator a few times and would have the one in your pond for Thanksgiving if I was your neighbor, there in would the trouble, so best for all to stay here. But I take many safe short visits all over the world, in your beautiful bird stories, verses and photos. Thank you Mr Lee. MC in TN

    • FYI, Lee Dusing is a lady — her husband (who photographed the sneaky gator) is a man. They are a very godly couple and I ma privileged to count them as my friends.

Thanks for the comments, but killing Gators for Thanksgiving would take a permit. 🤔 Turkey would taste better.
