About

We are Christian Birdwatchers who enjoy viewing and photographing the many creatures the Great Creator has made. These are thoughts and activities, especially about our Birdwatching Adventures.

This is a copy of the very first Birds of the Bible Blog that started this adventure into blogging.

Birds of the Bible – Introduction

Goal: To encourage your understanding and help you form a mental picture of the fowls or birds of the are found in Scripture.

God has created the fowls and birds and they are mentioned throughout the Bible. When you read the name of a bird, does a mental picture come to view or do you just keep reading without a thought to what you just read? Sure, you know some of them, like the Eagle or a Sparrow, but how about a Bittern, Ossifrage, Hoopoe, or Lapwing? Not just their names are important, but how about the illustrations that use birds to teach lessons? God’s care, strength, provision and other lessons are taught with birds as the examples.

Wood Stork

“But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; And the birds
of the air, and they will tell you;” Job 12:7

So, let’s get started with:

The Birds of the Bible

“Then God said, ‘Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.’ So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’ So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.” Gen 1: 20-23

Here we see that God created the birds on day five of creation and that “it was good.”

“Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.” Gen 2:19-20a

Adam was given the privilege of giving all the “critters” their names. Were there as many varieties of birds then as now? There have been changes within the species (kinds), but not evolution (changing from one kind to another kind).

Depending on which copy of the Bible you use, here are some of the names of birds mentioned in the Bible. These will be introduced in following blogs. Not necessarily in the following order.
Bittern; Chicken; Cormorant; Crane; Cuckoo; Dove; Eagle; Falcon; Glede; Hawk; Hen; Heron; Hoopoe; Kite; Lapwing; Night Hawk; Osprey; Ossifrage; Ostrich; Owl; Partridge; Peacock; Pelican; Pigeon; Quail; Raven; Sparrow; Stork; Swallow; Swan; Vulture

Here is a copy of a blog I did when I got to doubting why I am doing this.

I have been thinking about the Birds of the Bible Series I am working on. Yesterday, we finished our Missions Conference at Faith and was motivated even more to do this blog. Today, while searching the internet for information for my next article, I realized again how many others have done similar blogs. Shades of doubt began to form. So, why am I doing this?
The Lord has helped me to REMEMBER why.
1. The Lord wants us to praise Him and declare His mighty and wondrous works.
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts. I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, And on Your wondrous works. (Psa 145:3-5)
2. I love bird watching and am amazed and awed at the how God created the birds. Their beauty, structure, song and habits are amazing. To know that they are under the “curse” along with us, and still they are inspiring.
3. As we sang yesterday, “Little Is Much When God Is In It”. My efforts may be small, and this won’t be a famous blog, but to share with others my love for birds and the Lord is strong.
4. My husband also greatly reassured me.
There are a lot of great websites that teach about the Birds of the Bible and others that are all about birds. I will try to share those sites for your information and try not to “re-invent the wheel.”

  1. Thank you for your website! We are a homeschooling family and our oldest child is very interested in birds. We wanted to help her along but dismayed by the enviromental/evolutionist bent to birding organizations. I stumbled upon your site and was so happy!

We were thinking of gifting her with a birding set (field notebook, bird guide etc) for Christmas which would include a membership to a birding society but have yet to find a decent one. Do you have any suggestions? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    • Hi, Amy,
I read your reply and was trying to come up with an answer to your request. I really do not know of one. The Audubon Society is more for adults, but do some projects for younger folks. I don’t belong to them myself. I don’t agree with all that they do, but they do great projects that help the birds. I have mixed feelings.
Also, I am busy with other things and don’t really have the time to attend meetings. When Dan and I go birdwatching, we like to take photos which slows us down from their walks. Plus, in the field, I have to use a walker.
Your daughter can greatly learn from the All About Birds website at:
      https://www.allaboutbirds.org/
Not sure this helps, but also, maybe your area has an active birdwatching club that does special walks for the younger birders. There are a few in some areas.
What ever you do, continue to encourage her. The birds are fantastic to watch and are [sort of] waiting for her to come watch them.

    • Thanks for the encouragement. I have some bugs I am trying to work out. Don’t know CSS to get my Title to not wrap around and split my Title. I need a smaller type, but it makes the other titles smaller also.
But, yes, after 6 yrs, we needed a change.

      • You know, the band that has your title in it looks like a sidebar. If it is, maybe you could use an image widget there, and do a photo with your title in the photo. I do that on my headers a lot of times when I want my title bigger than it is in this theme. And you can choose any size font for any of the words.

Also, if I don’t really want a picture behind the words, I often take a blank white (or other color) square, turn it into a picture so my photo programs will work with it and then add whatever text I want. Then I can change the size of the picture to anything that fits the space.

If there’s any way I can be of help by experimenting with your title that way, let me know. Of course, you may have much more sophisticated photo programs than I do, but just wanted you to know I’ll be glad to do some checking to see what’s possible with mine.

What theme is this anyway? If it’s a free them, I can put the theme on my test blog and experiment. No one sees anything on that site except me until I know it’s what I want. That’s why I created it. It allows me to see how things work and look without messing up my other one.

Our company, Illustra Media, has produced a documentary that explores the miracle of avian flight and the compelling evidence for intelligent design revealed in the biological systems essential for life in the skies. It is called FLIGHT: The Genius of Birds. Could I send you a copy for review? I would be very interested in your comments.

Keep up the great work. I appreciate all you are doing to reveal the splendor of God’s creation.

  6. CORRECTION!! Lee, My previous response, below, was to CharlesF. and was in your defense!! I am a devout Christian, a birder and a newer blogger and I guess I entered my comment in the wrong spot!! Sorry for any misunderstanding and thank you for your gracious and calm response.

This message was in response to CharlesF. It was a tongue-in-cheek response to try to get a point across to him. I especially wanted to comment on his “certainty” that it would be impossible for God to create the world in 7 days by pointing out the fact that he is basing his ideas on a human perspective, which is the fundamental flaw in Charles’ reasoning.

Clarification – My previous response, below, was to CharlesF…
“A Believer” wrote… It would be understandable for an atheist to be “scared of the responses”. Sure, “science” created everything, just one big bang and every creature and living thing was created, with DNA and everything. No intelligent design. Really? By the way, science and religion do not contradict each other. Also, your certainty that it would be impossible for God to create the world in 7 days is based on your human perspective and understanding. That is the fundamental flaw in your reasoning. Your responses sadden me. Also, calling this blogger “stupid”, is extremely rude. You are well spoken and articulate, why not use that for “a greater good”.

  7. Hey, Lee. I’m posting this comment here mainly because it seemed the most “generic” place to post. I saw the link in my e-mail this morning for the new post “A Living Hope.” But when I clicked on it, I got a page that says, “404 Not Found,” along with a line of text that says, “Where on earth did you get a link like this?” It says WordPress searched all of its options before saying the page could not be found. In my e-mail, I clicked on the actual title of the post, and I also clicked on the little link that says, “read more of this post,” but they both came up with that page. Thought you’d like to know about it, in case everyone else who’s following you has the same problem. It may be that you’ll have to copy and past the article onto a brand new post and see if they get the link right on it.

  9. Mr. Flemming, I hope you do not mind my stepping into this conversation. As I was reading through the comments, I couldn’t help but notice that you are a strong proponent of the theory of evolution. My question is, “Why are you?” Have you ever seen anything at all personally that PROVES BY SCIENTIFIC TESTING that man evolved from a lower state? Is there any one concrete piece of evidence that you can point to and say, “This proves that the evolution of man is true?” If not, then you are simply following some dogma that you have read about in someone else’s words and taking their word for all of it. All of the material you refer to and believe is one-sided and prejudiced, and you have simply made the decision to believe it. Doesn’t that bother you a little? And doesn’t it make you a little uneasy that your sphere of reference is so small and biased?

You talk about the education in our country. When I was in college, I was given a biology book with a statement on the first page which said that evolution had been proven to be the process by which all living beings had come to this earth. I laughed out loud! Simply because I was intelligent enough and educated enough to KNOW that evolution has NEVER been proven. And in fact, scientific research — and even simple layman research — proves every single day that if you leave any living organism totally on its own, with no outside nourishment, nurturing, help, or encouragement to develop properly, it will not evolve at all — but it will regress and degenerate, usually to the point of death and decay. That process holds true without fail — every time.

The simple fact is that not one piece of scientifically proven evidence has EVER been uncovered that will verify the evolution process of man. Every single time, and there have been about a dozen, that a “discovery of the missing link” has been touted by so-called scientists and the media, those pieces of “evidence” have been proven false. Do your own research. There is not one scientifically verifiable piece of any living creature that fits the criteria for the link to the human race. Even after all these centuries of scientific research. Some of the best minds in the world have been TRYING to prove evolution for centuries, and not one piece of proof???? That should tell you something. It literally takes more “faith” to believe in evolution that it does to believe in creation by God.

Moreover, I know of several highly acclaimed scientists who have testified, publicly and repeatedly, to having gone on a quest to prove the creation theory wrong, but when all of their scientific research was done, they ended up acknowledging the fact that there was more evidence FOR creation than against it. The TRUTH is that the theory of evolution is just that: a worn-out theory — untried and unproven. I’m sorry for you and all the others like you who have nothing else to cling to except a relic of failed intellectual theorizing. Perhaps one day you will gain the enlightenment necessary to see onto the higher plane where real Truth will give you more to believe in. I sincerely hope that comes to pass.

  10. Hello, Lee.

I just discovered your blog a couple days ago, and I am thrilled that you have created it. I have been in ministry for about 40 years, and as a teacher of God’s Word, I am blessed to find a site that has worked to collect and organize so much research and knowledge into one place. Your photos are gorgeous too. For both reasons, I will enjoy returning here often.

  11. Lee, friend……. all of your examples are presented from a biased angle. Every article that you ask me to read is from the same source, and from your side of the fence, so you can’t seriously expect me to think that it is a valid argument. I was wondering how you would explain fossil evidence and I see that you just dismiss it as forgery. In my entire life, this is the first time that I have ever encountered the suggestion that fossils were forgeries…….. are you serious?
I am honestly sympathetic to your wish, desire and hope that there is a creator, an ultimate force that created the world. Who wouldn’t hope for that, but I honestly believe that you only want to believe that because of the promise of eternal life. You are just edging your bets and are being cowardly because you can’t face up to your destiny. If you really passionately believe that as a fact, then you are going to have a happy contested life. For my part I am not telling you whether I agree, or disagree, but I can tell you that you simply can’s dismiss evolution because there is too much evidence, whereas there is no evidence whatsoever that God created the earth in 6 days or even 6 million dys for that matter! . I presume he put his feet up on day 7…… think about it,it is just ridiculous. The Bibles Old Testaments are roughly translated texts that would have been written by scribes and scholars who put their own spin on the words during translation. If you are going to believe everything in the Old Testament then you must believe it all and not just pick out the things that fit your argument.
I still ask you, do you not find it weird that 51% of Americans believe in creationism, but only 1% of British people. What does that say about you as a nation? I think it marks your society out as gullible and easily led. A country where the blind lead the blind wouldn’t you say. When one considers the power that your country holds…. well that’s what I find so scary!

    Like

    • I suppose anything I would read from your side wouldn’t be biased? Just because you say it is a fact doesn’t make it so. Not sure which is the is the gullible one. If something is from “your side of the fence”, then it is a “valid argument”? About the forgeries, you need to do some reading. There are some that have been shown that they are, even those in the article. I believe there are fossils, but not that they are millions of years old. Most were buried during the worldwide flood, which you do not believe in. There is evidence for that, but you will never read about it from your side of the fence. They won’t let it be published. Where are your transitional fossils?
I have no problem believing in a Creator God. It is your country who has changed. Your country used to be a pretty good Christian nation. Many great missionaries came from your shores to minister around the world to those lost in sin. But! Your nation now has 1% you say who believe in creationism. What a shame! Your country has been corrupted by false doctrine and you feel sorry for me because we still, at least 51%, believe in the truth. Unfortunately you have been trained in that environment. Don’t feel sorry for us.
I could give you quotes from the Bible about evidence, but since you don’t accept it, we are at a stand still.
What I can tell you is that the Lord loves you and has provided salvation for you. It is your choice to deny it or to accept it. If in the end, you are right and I evolved and then just die and go back to the ground, so be it. If on the other hand, there IS a God who provides a way of salvation and who says that whosoever believes in Him shall be saved (John 3:16) and that those who reject Him end up condemned to hell, then, I will come out ahead and enjoy eternity with Christ. It is a choice every individual has to make.

  12. ……… but surely common sense must tell you that God didn’t write the bible, the ideas were eventually written after being passed down by word of mouth for eons. For you to cling to these ancient writings and then somehow believe, or try to have us believe that they are God’s very own words is just fantasy. Are you seriously telling me that you don’t believe in evolution? How can any intelligent person deny this? There are wonderful things all around us, beautiful music art, scenery, wildlife and of course birds which I happen to enjoy and their presence enriches my life. It is so obvious that they evolved. Science has proven this beyond any doubt and it’s not open for discussion or contradiction because it is just a fact.
We have both mentioned the word “scary” but what I really find most disturbing is that you are a citizen of the most advanced and richest nation on earth and yet education in your country has surely failed you in such an extreme way.
I am determined not to insult you in anyway, I am just trying to find out why you have such extreme ideas, along with so many of your fellow countrymen. Very few people in the UK would even for a second, believe in creationism, yet so many US citizens do, how can this be?

  13. Your response scares me even more, but I don’t think that any of my comments previously posted, made a statement of my disbelief, or for that matter, belief in God. All I have said is that it scares me that you can cling to the idea that God created the earth, and all it contains in 7 days… that’s just patently stupid. The way that you constantly use quotes from text translated in “old-English”and then quote this as though it is verbatim is also a little bit eccentric to say the least. Particularly when one considered that no one, either in England and obviously not in the USA, speaks in this way. Or should I say “speaketh” hope this makes the point. There’s an institute in Creation Research, wow! Weird! What can they possible do?

    Like

    • We are from two different world views. When a person denies the creation, and yes, in 7 days, they are in denial of the Word of God. Evolution has no place for God and the theory is just that, a theory. Darwin or any of his associates and followers are not able to “scientifically test” that theory. They were not here. Neither was I, but, I believe in God, who says He was here and that He created it. And did it in 6 days and then rested the 7th. So that scares you. To believe all the things you see “just happened by chance” scares me.
In your first remark you said, “But a bit scary to be honest that anyone with the intelligence to create this really well crafted website could cling to such a strange idea.” If you think that I just put letters on a page and symbols and out came this website, “by chance” then you are wrong. It takes planning, ideas and forethought to make it happen, produced on a computer, that didn’t just “happen by chance” and onto a place like WordPress, whose program (planned) let it get produced on an internet (again designed and planned). To believe that man and all these beautiful birds just came about by chance, scares me. There was and is a Creator, Designer, Planner, whose thoughts are above our thoughts that made this world and it’s contents come into being. Not some theory of a finite man, who is now dead, but the real Creator lives on.

    • Charles – two points. First, Shakespeare is still read in old English and no one considers that eccentric. That was the language into which the KJV was translated, and many people consider it to be formal English and worthy of God’s majesty, just as the language of the British parliament etc are still used today. I go to extremes – I use the NIV as my modern Bible and the third century Peshitta as my ancient text.. It is translated directly from Aramaic to English skipping the to Greek and to Latin translations. I consider it far more informative as a historical book, and this is, after all, what we are dealing with.

Second, your feigned amazement at a Christian science operation is irrational – there are a good number, and they do all the science anyone else does, using the same evidence, but in my opinion, coming up with a far more logical answers. Evolution and materialism are based on assumptions. Faith! – At least 14 minimum to accept evolution. You can provide NO explanation as to where mass, energy and time came from for a big bang, nor how a random explosion can create order, precision.and beneficial laws of physics. You cannot explain the formation of useful amino acids, for as the possibly fraudulent experiments of Miller/Urey demonstrated, life-producing aminos cannot be produced by anything but existing life. Nor can you suggest a method by which all these non-existent aminos formed proteins, nor how these non-existent proteins assembled them selves in the right order, at the right time, in the right conditions to form the simplest cel. NOR have you any possible theory on how that simplest of cells created the 1000 pages of complex data and code necessary for it to exist. And that cel would necessarily be a virus, which had no host upon which to draw. And no possibility of reproduction.

But your “arrogance” if I may use that word ignores the fact that almost every scientific discipline used in science today was the result of a creationist exercising his discovery of his Creators world, Newton, Kepler, Watts, Pascal, Pasteur, etc. You cannot classify fossils without using creationist Linneaus’ taxonomy., etc. I attended a conference last year with perhaps 15 speakers – all PHD’s, most tenured professors, one invented the gene gun making genetic engineering possible, etc. The worlds leading expert on karstology. ALL former evolutionists, all had become creationists because of the EVIDENCE. Anthony Flew wrote of his journey from atheism to intelligent design, based on evidence and titles his book: There is a God.

You would increase you knowledge of the world and science immeasurably by looking at the research done by these scientists rather than diminishing their spectacular work out of hand, a very unscientific position to take. Did you know that about 90% of the fauna and flora existing today is found buried with the dinosaurs and no visible change has occurred since? Did you know that the argon dating of volcanoes is totally unreliable – samples from the 1976 eruption in NZ were tested by GeoChron of Boston at 3.3 my? Do you understand the RATE project and its research into polonium halos? Can you explain C14 in Diamonds, coal and t-Rex fossils?

There ‘s so much you will never know if you stay in your scientific ghetto. take a chance – look outside. Its OK! I used to think like you do, but the facts got in the way. I understand your pain when your paradigm collapses. Been there.

    • Check out John 5:44-47 before you so glibly deny the authoritative history reported in Genesis 1:20-23, which reports that all of t e original birds were created on Day #5 of Creation Week. Eventually you will be judged for how you treat the book of Genesis since it is one of the 5 books of Moses that the Lord Jesus Himself endorsed as authoritative. Only a fool would think himself or herself to be smarter (or better informed) than the Lord Jesus Christ.

  14. I am pretty sure that you are not doing too much harm, but surely you are a little bit crazy to make the assumption, totally opposed to science, that God created everything, including birds, in 7 days. It’s a nice idea for a 5 year old to be told but it can’t possibly stand up as an argument for longer than 10 seconds or so. It must be nice to be able to support such a sweet idea. But it totally contradicts science. But a bit scary to be honest that anyone with the intelligence to create this really well crafted website could cling to such a strange idea. What scares me even more is that apparently more than 50% of US citizens believe in creationism rather than evolution. Surely more of an indictment for the sad state of education in the US than anything else.

      The Folly of Humanism
      December 12, 2011

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” (Psalm 14:1)

Despite all their pretense of scientific intellectualism, those who deny the existence of a personal Creator God are, in God’s judgment, nothing but fools. The 14th Psalm, the 53rd Psalm, Romans 3, etc., all describe the inner character of all such people–whether they call themselves atheists or humanists or pantheists or whatever. This repeated emphasis indicates how strongly God feels about those who dare to question His reality. It is bad enough to disobey His commandments and to spurn His love; it is utter folly to deny that He even exists!

The Bible describes the awful descent from true creationism into evolutionary pantheistic humanism. “When they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. . . . Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator” (Romans 1:21-22, 25).

Certain atheists/humanists claim to be moral people, though their criteria of morality are often quite different from those of the Bible. No matter how admirable their humane acts of “righteousness” may seem, however, they are guilty of the sin of unbelief, the greatest sin of all. “Without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is” (Hebrews 11:6). With all the innumerable evidences of God’s reality as seen in the creation and throughout history, and then especially in the Person and work of Jesus Christ, it is utter foolishness to plunge blindly into eternity to meet the God whom they deny. Love your website, I too, marvel at the awesome creativity of the Holy Spirit, on a daily basis.

    Thank You,

    • Yes, referring to the effects of Satan’s enticing Adam and Eve to sin.
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. (Romans 8:22 KJV)
“Sin has caused all creation to fall from the perfect state in which God created it. The world is in bondage to death and decay so that it cannot fulfill its intended purpose. One day all creation will be liberated and transformed. Until that time it waits in eager expectation for the resurrection of God’s children.” (From Life Application Notes)
