Birds in Hymns – W. Howard Doane
W. Howard Doane was a musician that composed the music to over 2000 hymns.
Born: February 3, 1832, Preston, Connecticut.
Died: December 23, 1915, Rhode Island.
Buried: Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum, Cincinnati, Ohio.
A gifted musician, Doane helped direct music while attending the Woodstock Academy; within two years he had published his first composition. He called music his “avocation.” However, his main trade was secular: He was president of the J. A. Fay woodworking machinery company, and an extremely successful businessman. He was one of the leading gospel musicians at that time. He was a personal friend of Fanny Crosby and together they produced many of her hymns. He also served as Sunday School superintendent and choir director at the Mount Auburn Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, and bequeathed large sums to various causes. The Doane Memorial Music Building in Chicago, Illinois, was named after him. His works include:
* Sabbath School Gems, 1862
* Songs of Devotion, 1868

More information on William Doane from Christian Biography Resources
Dear Lee: My name is Chris. I have recently come into a copy of Sunny-side songs for Sunday schools.
Except for a few torn pages i believe it to be complete except for introduction page. It is copyrighted 1893 by H. Howard Doane. Apparently this is quite rare as all i can find are reprints. I am offering this copy for sale. I can send pics. Any help or pointing me in the right direction to find out more on this would certainly be appreciated. Truly, Chris

Chris, I could only suggest checking around on the internet for Christian Music or Rare Christian books. Maybe a lead will come up. Maybe one of our readers may respond to this commend. What a find, and Lord bless you as you seek to find the information you seek. (I updated your comment, I am Lee, a female. Not to worry, it has happened before. :-) )

Sorry I haven’t replied sooner, but was away for the passing of my mother-in-law. I do not have any sheet music. You might try some of the links on my sidebar under “Online Hymnals.” I use the Cyber Hymnal for most of my words and music for the Birds in Hymns.
