  1. America’s tallest bird, the Whooping Cranes became endangered decades ago (down to 23 total!) — yet, thankfully, their slowly growing population has been (for now, at least) rescued and rehabilitated by serious conservation/preservation efforts, so that there are now more than 600 of them. (That’s still not very many.) During the mid-AD1990s our family visited Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, along the Texas coastline of the Gulf of Mexico, and we saw these majestic and graceful (and huge) birds in the wild, as they hunted for food in the marshy shore-waters there. Unexpectedly, then, we also had the privilege of seeing another populationally at-risk species, the Least Tern (which breeds along the Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico during winter), as well as other species of gulls and terns. These birds are wonderful winged witnesses of God’s artistry and love of life.
