Great Day at Faith Baptist – 12/15/13

Pastor Jerry

Pastor Jerry

What a fantastic day! We had our Christmas Cantata this morning and then after a great boxed lunch, we had a praise time.

Our Music Director, Assistant Pastor, Visitation Pastor, etc. was honored. Pastor Jerry Smith has been here for almost 30 years and this was the last Cantata under his direction. He is “retiring” from that part of his ministry. He is not retiring entirely, just backing off some of his duties. He is in his 70’s now.

Pastor Jerry and Shirley

There were many testimonies given about him and his faithfulness to the Lord and to us at the church. He has visited so many of us when we have been in the hospital. Seven years ago I had back surgery and a nerve was nicked to my legs. I lost all feeling in my legs and feet. Each day I gained more feeling in my toes. Pastor Jerry came for a visit and when I told him that I had feeling in another toe, he broke into a song. “One toe at a time, dear Jesus.” That is just typical of him. He is a great soul winner, encourager, and has a great sense of humor. We all love him.

Here are some verses that Pastor Jerry is able to claim.

According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; (1 Timothy 1:11-12 KJV)

Our Cantata was absolutely super and honoring to Our Savior. It was “Everlasting Light” A Christmas Carol For A Dark World. Maybe in a few days, I can post some excerpts from it.

Ark from trees for protection!

Branch from a tree to turn the taste of water!

Striped and spotted barks of trees

to change the colour of the sheep’s fur!

Two blocks of tree to hang Himself!

God calls us as trees!

What sort of tree are we?

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalm 1:3

Then God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.” God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” (Genesis 1:20-22 NASB)

April Lorier Adventuring With God

Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:6-8 KJV)

A well know writer and friend has gone to be with Her Lord. April Lorier became a friend and has written several articles on this blog. April was the author of God’s Battered Child: Journey From Abuse to Leader. Here are the blogs she produced April Lorier Perspective – God Woman Blog – Christian Nature. They have all been made inactive. She also contributed to Nature Blog Network

Here is an excerpt from Yahoo:

April Lorier, Author and Encourager

Inspirational author, poet, writer and Christian blogger. Children’s rights activist who successfully fought for the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) which was signed into law by Ronald Reagan. Encourager of Christian believers worldwide.

I know that she has been ailing for sometime and I do not have details about her death. Her websites have been removed, but we still have some of her articles here. It may take a day or two to find all the links to her sites, but they will be corrected.

April found my blog not long after I started it up. She began giving me tips on how to raise my ratings and just encouraged me to continue to develop this blog by honoring Our Lord. We exchanged many phone calls and became good friends. Never met her, she lived in California and I am here in Florida, but distance didn’t get between our friendship. She allowed me to repost several of her blogs and she shared links to my articles on her blog.

Now her blogs have been removed and I am glad some of her articles are still here to be enjoyed. But as for April, she could care less about what is going on here. She is in the presence of Her Lord, whom she loved. Her faith has become site.

April, you will be missed.

Lee’s Addition:

What a beautiful bird, but also what a solemn warning.

The Coppersmith Barbet, Crimson-breasted Barbet or Coppersmith (Megalaima haemacephala), is a bird with crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer. It is a resident found in the Indian Subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. Like other barbets, they chisel out a hole inside a tree to build their nest. They are mainly fruit-eating but will take sometimes insects, especially winged termites. They belong to the Megalaimidae – Asian Barbets Family.

I found AJ’s remark about the youngster failing to get back to the nest on time interesting and found these remarks on Wikipedia.

Coppersmith Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala) by MAMuin

Coppersmith Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala) by MAMuin

Keeps solitary, pairs, or small groups; larger parties occasionally on abundantly fruiting Ficus trees. Fond of sunning themselves in the morning on bare top branches of tall trees, often flitting about to sit next to each other. The flight is straight, with rapid flaps.

They compete with other cavity nesting birds and frugivores. Megalaima asiatica have been noted to evict them from their nest holes, while Red-vented Bulbuls have been seen to indulge in kleptoparasitism, robbing the male of berries brought to the female at the nest.

The nest holes are also used for roosting and some birds roost alone in cavities and these often roost during part of the day. Immatures will roost with the parents but often return to roost early so as not to be prevented by the parents from entering the roost cavity.

Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. Thanks, A J, your timing is perfect as usual. We just got back from a week and a half trip to Indiana. Praise the Lord for his traveling mercies and for all of you who were praying for us as we traveled 2,300 miles. Also, we had great weather. Only one rain storm for about 10 minutes which produced a beautiful rainbow in South Carolina. More about the trip that later.

“The Term Bird Brain Is Evolving

Some birds—crows, parrots, and jays—possess problem-solving skills that rival those of mammals. Crows demonstrate impressive memory for details, even remembering for years the faces of people who annoy them. Does this represent true cognitive ability? Some birds can improvise tools—by bending a piece of wire, for instance—to get the food they want. Are they actually reasoning or just associating each step with coming closer to the goal? Are birds able to get a picture in their minds of what they want to accomplish and then reason out the steps, or are simpler stepwise “associative learning” processes involved?” … that is the beginning of the article.

Common Ostrich (Struthio camelus) Foot at Riverbanks Zoo SC by Lee

Common Ostrich (Struthio camelus) Foot front at Riverbanks Zoo SC by Lee

The ostrich leaves her eggs on the ground and warms them in the dust, Forgetting that a foot may crush them or that the wild beast may trample them. She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers; her labor is in vain because she has no sense of danger [for her unborn brood], For God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has He imparted to her understanding. (Job 39:14-17 AMP)

Here is one more excerpt from the ending of the article which is very interesting and worth reading:

A Better Explanation

God provides in His Word the historical account of the origin of birds, man, and all things. Furthermore, the Bible informs us that God is the one who supplies or deprives an animal of its intelligence. In particular, God takes the credit for the lack of bird-smarts in the ostrich, telling Job, “God deprived her of wisdom, and did not endow her with understanding” (Job 39:17). God also points out that He is the source of wisdom for the hawk and eagle (Job 39:26–27). Learning what makes a bird tick offers a fascinating bit of insight into the creatures our Creator designed and how their brains work.

Our 50th Anniversary Today

Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla) and Dan

Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla) and Dan

Today, Dan and I are celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary or our Golden Anniversary. It is hard to believe that is was 50 years ago that we began our journey through life together. On July 26, 1963 we said our “I do”s and now here we are on July 26, 2013 enjoying this day together. Praise the Lord for His grace and guidance over the years.

Our pastor asked Dan yesterday how it feels to be married fifty years? Dan told him, “My grandfather told me while going through the reception line at our wedding, ‘Son, your first 50 years will be the hardest. The rest is easy’.”

We were both Christians when we got married and have tried to keep the Lord at the head over the years. He has blessed us beyond measure even though at times He slipped from the Number One position because of our attitudes. If you were to ask how do you stay married and in love for these many years, then the Lord is the answer.

On our 25th Anniversary, my sister sent a poem to us, that I would like to share:

Marriage Takes 3

I once

thought marriage

took just two to make a

go but now I am convinced

it takes the Lord also. And

not one marriage fails where

Christ is asked to enter as

lovers come together with Jesus

at the center. But marriage seldom thrives

and homes are incomplete till He

is welcomed there to help avoid

defeat. In homes where God

is first it’s obvious to see

those unions really work

For marriage still

takes three.

(Perry Tanksley)

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (Matthew 19:4-6 KJV)

We have always had many common interest. Number one, our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our current other interest is our birdwatching activities which readers of this blog are familiar with. Dan is the photographer, who takes the good pictures, and I attempt to write about our adventures.
